2019 Azur Proprietary Red Blend: A Bordeaux-Inspired Expression of Napa Valley
By Amber T.
Azur was launched in 2007 by owner and winemaker, Elan Fayard, with a vision of producing wines representative of the special vineyard sites they derive from. Inspired by studies in Provence and Bordeaux and an immersive background in oenology, hospitality and journalism, Fayard found Napa Valley to be the ideal place to produce the terroir-driven wines she is dedicated to showcasing. Today, she calls a restored farmhouse in the Coombsville appellation home, for herself and her family.
Made from grapes grown on hillside sites in Oakville, the 2019 Azur Proprietary Red Blend is a full, velvety Bordeaux-style wine. As one of Azur’s signature wines, this bottle opens up with aromas of blackberry, cassis and violets, followed by undertones of crushed herbs, rose petals and a hint of black pepper on the nose. At once elegant yet powerful, it unfolds gradually on the palate, with flavors of dark chocolate and black cherry. Integrated tannins and a long mouthfeel create a lingering experience while drinking this rich Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot blend.
This wine in particular is reflective of Fayard’s desire to pull from her French-inspired winemaking philosophies to create wines truly expressive of the stunning Napa Valley vineyards they begin in.
