Bale Grist Mill: A Dose of History
By Amber T.
Most visitors come to St. Helena for the unparalleled culinary offerings, wine tasting and shopping along the quaint Main Street district. Missing from that list of activities is a dose of history and a chance to discover a piece of California heritage that is still in operation today. Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park, located about ten minutes north of downtown St. Helena, is the site of an original grain mill built in 1846 that was a central part of life for Napa Valley settlers. One of only a few mills of its kind still in operation in the country, the park offers demonstrations, tours, special events, and educational activities for visitors to learn more about its essential role in early Napa Valley life. Also onsite is the first church founded in the area as well as the historic Pioneer Cemetery.
