A Work of Art: The Napa Valley Opera House

By Stefanie S.

When it comes to a venue with an impressive history, the Napa Valley Opera House deserves rave reviews. Located on 1030 Main Street, the historic landmark was built in 1879 and designed by 19th-century architects Newsom and Newsom (Samuel and Joseph Cather). The grand Italianate-style structure opened with a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's “H.M.S. Pinafore” in 1880, and from then on, the venue became a burgeoning center for arts, culture, and entertainment.

Although the Napa Valley Opera House closed in 1914 due to economic burdens, and lay vacant for several decades, it was restored and reopened in 2003. Since then this cultural treasure of the city reemerged as a vibrant destination for music and community arts. Serving as an open-floor or seated theater-style space, the venue includes a fully licensed bar, an upgraded sound desk and stage, plus a VIP area for up to 75 guests. Today, performances range from BottleRock Napa Valley AfterDark shows to renowned global jazz artists booked by Blue Note Napa.
